Sichuan known formerly in the West by its postal map spellings of Szechwan or Szechuan. The capital is Chengdu, a key economic centre of Western China. Throughout its early history, the region and its vicinity in the Yangtze River region was the cradle of unique local civilizations which can be dated back to at least the 15th century BC. Sichuan has been historically known as the "Province of Abundance". It is one of the major agricultural production bases of China. Grain, including rice and wheat, is the major products. The Chengdu Military Region is Head Quartered in Chengdu the Capital of Sichuan Province.
